Locative media

Locative media are digital media that are linked to particular geographical locations, through the use of GPS for example. Locative media can encourage new ways of engaging with the layered histories, meanings and sensory experiences of landscape.

Soundlines was a locative media project carried out with school children by Strata Collective, a group of artists working with story, music and new media to create playful, innovative learning experiences.

The project involved field trips and pervasive media technology, specialist training for the children – in film, animation, music and mediascape (media layered into the landscape, triggered by GPS when walking with headphones and portable computers).

“It could be that the software you want children to evaluate isn’t available in school because of the school’s child protection firewalls – so there are all kinds of practical issues there.”
Judy Robertson, Heriot Watt University
